Yesterday, we passed a beach that had hundreds of elephant seals. They lay on the beach for 3-4 weeks while they molt. Molting consists of layers of their skin and fur peeling off and regenerating. While they are laying on the beach, they spoon each other and intermittently throw sand on themselves, which they use as a natural sunscreen. They are called elephant seals because the adult males have tusks. We only saw females and prepubescent males. They are hilarious to watch. In this edition of home movies, we watch an elephant seal attempt to make it to the beach.
